This is the picking at the beginning of the song. The picking varies throughout the rest of the song. You could even just play what ever come natural when playing the chords, instead of trying to restrict yourself to how it sounds on record. (My 2 cents)

First Release of the song Knocking on heavens Door was in the Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid movie by Bob Dylan in 1973.

Guns N' Roses consisted of Axl Rose (on vocals), Slash (on guitar), Duff McKagen (on bass), Steve Adler (on drums) and Izzy Stradlin (on guitar) when they formed in June, 1985. In a just a few years, Guns N' Roses became a multi-million heavy metal music force with a rough and gritty sound that broke through all the way to the pop charts.
